"The growing needs of an ageing population require additional policies, in particular care and treatment, the promotion of healthy lifestyles and supportive environments."—Second World Assembly on Ageing, Madrid, 2002

The aging of the population in every region of world has a special impact on women, who live longer than men, suffer the double burden of gender and age discrimination, and carry reproductive health problems with them into old age. This section discusses the unique health needs of women as they grow older and move through menopause. It outlines the challenge facing health care systems in developing countries, which have largely focused on womens childbearing years, and examines potential interventions and services.
