HIV/AIDS

Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a public health disaster and a human tragedy. By the end of 2003, approximately 38 million people were living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and more than 30 million people worldwide had lost their lives to AIDS (Idemyor 2003; UNAIDS 2004). As the number of people infected with HIV continues to mount, efforts to provide care for those affected are just as critical as strategies for prevention, and have become an integral part of the response to control the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
